    Ron - Founder

    Army veteran & musician

My wife and I started Decibel Defense because I couldn’t find hearing protection I truly trusted. As an Army veteran and former musician, I’ve spent years around gunfire, engines, machinery, and live music — and I understood firsthand how easy it is to damage your hearing over time.

So we built the kind of earmuffs we wanted ourselves: industry-leading, long-term comfort, honest pricing, and customer support from people who care. Ten years later, Decibel Defense is still a growing, family-owned business, and we’re still just as proud of every pair we ship.

    FAQ

    Are earmuffs better than earplugs?

Both can be effective, but earmuffs are generally easier to wear correctly and provide more consistent performance across users.

Is 37 dB NRR considered high?

Yes. 37 dB NRR is among the highest levels of passive hearing protection available in earmuffs.

Why do earmuffs sometimes feel tight?

A secure seal is critical for effective sound reduction. A looser fit can allow sound leakage and reduce protection.

Does a higher NRR always mean better protection?

Generally, yes. A higher NRR indicates greater potential noise reduction when properly worn.

Why does OSHA lower the number?

OSHA applies conservative adjustments to account for real-world fit and usage differences across large groups of workers.
